Mixed metal and plastic components are hard to separate, which is why umbrellas usually end up in residual waste. Fabric canopies and handles are incinerated, while about 70% of the metal is recovered from bottom ash – roughly half compared with source-separated scrap.

Because it is usually disposed of in residual waste, the contained iron can only be recovered in lower quality, while the other materials are incinerated. The redesign shows this as a fragile metal skeleton without fabric covering – the umbrella’s protective function is completely lost.
