Instead of ending up at a recycling yard, this shoe is designed to return to the manufacturer, where it becomes a ski boot in its second life. The two petroleum-based polymers are easy to separate and can be remelted into new components within the same program.
The redesign follows the manufacturer’s claim that soft plastics can only be recycled into hard plastics. With minimal material use, the original shape is hinted at, but comfort and functionality are severely limited.
