This laptop contains valuable metals such as aluminum, copper, and gold that are largely recovered in electronics recycling. Plastic and glass components are mechanically separated from the metal and are usually incinerated afterwards. Specialized facilities recover about 80% of lithium, cobalt, and nickel from the battery.
The aluminum casing remains largely unchanged, as it is well recyclable. With fewer plastics, the keys are smaller and performance is heavily reduced. The display would theoretically no longer exist, but is shown in the redesign as a small, low-resolution version – highlighting how dependent the usability of digital devices is on non-recyclable components.
