On average, 50% of the waste wood from a chair like this is turned back into particle board. The other half of the wood and the cushioning are treated as residual waste and therefore go to energy recovery. Metal parts such as screws and springs are separated mechanically and keep circulating at high rates.
Since textiles and foam are lost and the wood is downcycled into particle board, the redesign preserves the basic seating function, but stability and comfort are noticeably reduced.
